Why You Need Surrogacy Insurance

One component of your journey will be putting surrogacy insurance in place for your gestational carrier. Even with the smoothest pregnancies and births, medical bills are expensive. Having the right insurance plan in place is a necessary step to ensure your surrogate – and your baby – is protected.

What Does Surrogacy Insurance Cover?

At Giving Tree, we connect intended parents with trusted insurance industry partners to put the right insurance plans in place. These plans will cover:

  • Prenatal and pregnancy care

  • Labor and delivery

  • Pregnancy complications

  • Post-birth care for the surrogate (related to the pregnancy)

Your insurance plan will NOT cover your baby’s medical care after the birth. It is the intended parents’ responsibility to ensure the proper insurance is in place to cover the baby after birth.

How Intended Parents Get Surrogacy Insurance

Intended parents do not need to figure the insurance needs on their own. Giving Tree’s trusted insurance partners will guide them through the process. Obtaining surrogacy insurance usually follows these 3 steps:

  1. Reviewing your surrogate’s existing insurance. If your surrogate has her own health insurance, her plan will be reviewed to see if it covers a surrogacy pregnancy. Most insurance plans do NOT cover surrogacy, so intended parents will need to put a plan in place.

  1. Work with a reputable surrogacy insurance specialist. Our team will help intended parents find the professionals that can best guide them. They will compare insurance plans and costs and inform intended parents of they type of insurance they need for their journey.

  1. Secure coverage before any medical steps are taken. Insurance should be in place before the embryo transfer.

Some of the insurance partners that we work with are IFI Insurance, ART Risk, and Nexxell Insurance. Intended parents expect their insurance specialist to review and/or suggest the following types of coverage (not all may apply):

  • Insurance reviews and reports

  • ACA (Affordable Care Act) enrollment guidance

  • Obstetrician and hospital searches

  • Complication insurance

  • Newborn insurance

  • Maternity coverage solutions when ACA options are unavailable

While the process of surrogacy insurance can feel overwhelming and complex, having the right professionals helps make everything go smoothly. You will be fully supported and guided at Giving Tree Surrogacy.
